John’s List

If you’re a regular listener of this podcast, you’re undoubtedly familiar with “John’s List” – John’s shit list of players past and present. We throw in the occasional Commissioner, GM, Coach, or newsworthy topic from around the hockey world.

Patrik Laine – Just 3 points (2 goals) in 9 games to date this season, and 1 point in his last 7 contests; Laine has been a fairly significant letdown to fantasy managers that took him in the 12th round on average this Fall.

Fantasy Lock Of The Week

Week 6 – Nov. 13-19, 2023

🔥Cale Makar, D, 100% Rostered (Yahoo), 100% Rostered (Fantrax)

The fastest blueliner in NHL history to reach 200 career assists, doing so in 254 games; Cale Makar led all skaters in points in week 6 with 8 total points (1 goal), averaging just shy of 24 minutes per game. Makar has 13 points in his last 6 games played, and is on-pace for a career-best 123 points and 21 goals over 82 games played.

Edge Work | NHL Schedule – Week 7

The segment where we put in the work to give you the EDGE in your fantasy hockey leagues! Each week the Hacks will cover the NHL Schedule and Waiver Wire Targets to guide you to victory.

Need To Know:

It’s week 7 of the NHL regular season! Week 7 throws a wrench in the familiar format. American Thanksgiving causes a change in the usual schedule format. This week Wednesday (14), Friday (15) and Saturday (8) are full days on the schedule. The remaining days of the week feature 7 or fewer games. Tuesday and Thursday have no games scheduled – so optimizing for games played will present a challenge throughout the week.

There are a total of 49 games on the schedule, with 3 “light days” (50% or fewer NHL teams in action) and 2 days where no games are scheduled (Tues and Thurs)

In terms of attempting to optimize the schedule for games played, there are a total of 8 teams (BOS, CGY, COL, EDM, NSH, NYR, SJ, VAN) next week that do provide an advantage with 4 games played. Of those teams, NSH is the only club to play two of their four games on “off-nights”

OTT would be the team to fade as they only play one game this week.

  • Monday – 7 Games
  • Tuesday – 0 Games
  • Wednesday – 14 Games
  • Thursday – 0 Games
  • Friday – 15 Games
  • Saturday – 8 Games
  • Sunday – 5 Games

Teams With 4 Games: BOS, CGY, COL, EDM, NAS, NYR, SJ, VAN

Teams With 3 Games: ANA, ARI, BUF, CAR, CHI, CBJ, DAL, DET, FLA, LA, MTL, NJ, NYI, PHI, PIT, SEA, STL, TB, WIN

Teams With 2 Games: MIN, TOR, VGK, WAS

Teams With 1 Games: OTT

Edge Work | NHL Waiver Wire Targets For Week 7

Waiver wire targets will be focused on players that are rostered in ~50% or less of Yahoo (or Fantrax) leagues. When considering players to target, we review recent performance, player deployment, upcoming schedule and more.

Forwards

🎯Logan Cooley (C), ARI
Rostered: 32% Yahoo (77% Fantrax) | GP: 3 (Vs.LAK, Vs.STL, @VGK) | Line: 2 (w/ Jason Zucker & Michael Carcone, PP1)

7 points (1 Goal) last 5 games played. It was announced on Friday that Barrett Hayton would miss 4-6 weeks; opening the door for a more significant role for both Logan Cooley and Nick Bjugstad. With any luck, Cooley will wind up with Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz on the top line; in addition to a more prominent role on the top power play unit. With 12 points (2 goals) in 16 games to date, Cooley is on-pace for 62-points in his rookie season.

🎯Matt Duchene (C/RW), DAL
Rostered: 54% Yahoo (75% Fantrax) | GP: 3 (Vs.NYR, Vs.VGK, Vs.CGY) | Line: 2 (w/ Mason Marchment & Tyler Seguin, PP2)

Matt Duchene is on-pace for 77 points through 15 games so far this season, posting 14 points and 6 goals. With 9 points and 4 goals in his last 5 games, there is absolutely no reason not to roster Duchene, at the very least in the short term. One concern is Duchene’s 17.1 iSH%, which is well above his career average of 13.2%; but not to be ignored is the 32-year old’s 16.2 tEVSH%. Enjoy the production while it lasts.

🎯Lawson Crouse (LW/RW), ARI
Rostered: 28% Yahoo (45% Fantrax) | GP: 3 (Vs.LAK, Vs.STL, @VGK) | Line: 2 (w/ Matias Maccelli & Nick Bjugstad, PP2)

Another Arizona Coyote to consider this week is Lawson Crouse, who in his last 10 games has collected 9 points (7 goals), while playing 16:39 TOI, 1:40 PPTOI (32% PP Share) and chipping in with 20 hits – 2 per game! Of note, during this productive streak of games, Crouse has been converting on 29.2% of his shots and has an IPP of 82%. While worth a short-term add, this is not a player you would drop anyone of significance for.

🎯Oliver Bjorkstrand (RW), SEA
Rostered: 30% Yahoo (52% Fantrax) | GP: 3 (Vs.CGY, Vs.SJS, Vs.VAN) | Line: 3 (w/ Eeli Tolvanen & Brandon Tanev, PP2)

Very quietly, Oliver Bjorkstrand has 15 points (6 goals) in 19 games to date this season – an 82-game pace of 65 points and 26 goals! At 2.1 SOG/GM, or 7.6 SOG/60, the shot rate leaves much to be desired, and a near career-best 15 iSH% is certain to regress. That being said, the other underlying numbers would suggest this production is sustainable; and Bjorkstrand may be a viable season-long option.

🎯Dawson Mercer (C/RW), NJD
Rostered: 25% Yahoo (62% Fantrax) | GP: 3 (@DET, Vs.CBJ, Vs.BUF) | Line: 3 (w/ Ondrej Palat & Alexander Holtz, PP2)

The absence of Jack Hughes and Nico Hiscier benefited Dawson Mercer, who over the last two weeks has posted 4 points (3 goals) in 6 games. Not earth shattering numbers, but the 22-year old played over 19 minutes, averaged 3 SOG/GM, and those 4 points were his only offense to date this season. The Devils have a favourable schedule in week 7, and even playing third line minutes, Mercer should be able to take advantage of easier matchups and keep the offense rolling. Remember, this is a player that posted 27 goals and 56 points as a sophomore last season.

🎯Cole Perfetti (C), WPG
Rostered: 27% Yahoo (65% Fantrax) | GP: 3 (@TB, @FLA, @NSH) | Line: 2 (w/ Nikolaj Ehlers & Vladislav Namestikov, PP1)

14 points (6 goals) in 17 games played for the 21-year old puts him on-pace for 68 points this season. The deployment leaves a bit to be desired, averaging just 13:56 TOI/GM overall this season and 2:39 PPTOI/GM; and the underlying numbers (17.1 iSH%, 11.3 tEVSH%) suggest a cool down is coming. The current production can’t be overlooked though, and Perfetti should be rostered in most formats.

🎯JT Compher (LW/RW), DET
Rostered: 21% Yahoo (29% Fantrax) | GP: 3 (Vs.NJD, @BOS, Vs.MIN) | Line: 2 (w/ Andrew Copp & David Perron, PP2)

This one is definitely more of a deep-league streaming option, but hear us out. The former Av is off to the best offensive start of his 8 year NHL career, posting 13 points (3 goals) in 17 games – an 82-game pace of 63 points. 9 of those points have come in just the last 8 games. There are definitely some red flags when reviewing the underlying numbers, but if you’re looking for a short-term option to fill a hole in your roster, you could do worse.

Defensemen

🎯Radko Gudas (D), ANA
Rostered: 49% Yahoo (47% Fantrax) | GP: 3 (Vs.MTL, Vs.LAK, @EDM) | Line: 3 (w/ Uhro Vaakanainen)

Radko Gudas is well-known for his physical contributions, but recently he has been chipping in offensively as well with 4 points (2 goals) in 4 games. In BASH formats Gudas has tremendous value, contributing nearly 2 PIMs per game in addition to 2.82 Hits/GM and 2.47 Blks/GM.

🎯Travis Sanheim (D), PHI
Rostered: 61% Yahoo (75% Fantrax) | GP: 3 (@NYI, Vs.NYR, @NYI) | Line: 1 (w/ Cam York)

With 14 points in 16 games, Travis Sanheim is shockingly on-pace for 72 points! Career-highs in TOI (26:03/GM), PPTOI (51.3% PP Share, 3:01/GM), 2.0 SOG/GM (4.6 SOG/60). The only red flag I see at the moment is a 70% IPP. If he is available in your league, go grab him now.

Goaltenders

🎯Casey DeSmith (G), VAN
Rostered: 27% Yahoo (29% Fantrax) | GP: 4 (Vs.SJS, @COL, @SEA, @SJS) | Role: Backup (41% Net Share)

Thatcher Demko is the workhorse netminder in Vancouver, and that won’t change barring a significant injury. However, it is worth noting that the former Pittsburgh backup has posted a respectable 4-1-1 record and .917 SV% behind one of the best teams in hockey so far in the 2023-2024 regular season.

🎯Charlie Lindgren (G), WSH
Rostered: 14% Yahoo (20% Fantrax) | GP: 2 (Vs.BUF, Vs.EDM) | Role: Backup (50% Net Share)

Charlie Lindgren has been brilliant for the Capitals when called upon, posting a 3-1-0 record to go with a 1.76 GAA, .947 SV% and 8.7 GSAx (4th in the NHL). Injuries (and inconsistent play) to Darcy Kuemper have provided Lindgren with opportunity and given his own level of play, he certainly is worthy of a spot start when possible.

🎯John Gibson (G), ANA
Rostered: 61% Yahoo (64% Fantrax) | GP: 3 (Vs.MTL, Vs.LAK, @EDM) | Role: Starter (63% Net Share)

John Gibson and the Anaheim Ducks have been a very pleasant surprise this season, sitting 4th in the Pacific Division with a 9-7-0 record through the first 16 games. Gibson has no doubt benefited from his team’s improved play, posting a 4-4-0 record with a 2.24 GAA and .928 SV%. At 6.2 GSAx, the 30-year old sits 8th league-wide in goals saved above expected.

ALSO – Connor Ingram (22%), ARI – In his last 5 starts: 5-0-0, 2.56 GAA, .928 SV%.
