NHL Trade Deadline Recap & Fantasy Impact
For a full recap of all trade deadline news, check out Left Wing Lock’s News and Player Updates page here. Below are the more noteworthy, and fantasy relevant, trades that occurred. The FHH team, along with Mike McLaughlin, will discuss the potential fantasy impacts for the remainder of the season.
In total, there were 33 trades that occurred, involving 56 players. There appeared to be a much longer delay this year between the actual deadline, and the point at which the last trade was processed. I read somewhere that teams were still in the queue at 5:30 PM EST!
General Discussion:
- Mike, thoughts on Philadelphia’s trade deadline?
- FHH Team, thoughts on the Edmonton Oilers trade deadline?
- Evgenii Dadonov trade was voided by the NHL – thoughts?
- Trade deadline winners?
- Trade deadline losers?
Fantasy Risers
Claude Giroux 🔁 Florida Panthers
The Philadelphia Flyers traded their long-time captain (pending UFA), Claude Giroux, along with Connor Bunnaman, German Rubtsov, and a 2024 5th round draft pick to the Florida Panthers, in exchange for Owen Tippett, a 2024 1st round draft pick, and a 2023 3rd round draft pick.
- Fantasy Impact:📈 | Giroux will make his debut with the Florida Panthers on Thursday night against the Montreal Canadiens. It has been confirmed that Giroux will play on Alexander Barkov’s right side. Obviously this is an upgrade for Barkov over current line mate, Carter Verhaeghe; and the same can be said for Giroux, who had recently been playing with Travis Konecny and Morgan Frost in Philadelphia.
Marc-Andre Fleury 🔁 Minnesota Wild
The Minnesota Wild acquired goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury in exchange for a conditional 2nd round pick (2022), which can become a 1st if Minnesota advances to the Western Conference Final and Fleury wins four or more games within the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Blackhawks also agreed to retain 50 percent of Fleury’s remaining salary.
- Fantasy Impact:📈 | Fleury goes from a team in Chicago that has a -52 goal differential, and is on the verge of a major rebuild; to a team in Minnesota that has a realistic chance to compete for the Stanley Cup. Over the past month, the Wild at 5v5 have given up the fewest scoring chances against (216), while also scoring the 7th most goals for (33). Cam Talbot is obviously a solid NHL netminder himself, so Fleury may actually see a bit lighter workload (with better peripherals) leading up to the playoffs.
Owen Tippett 🔁 Philadelphia Flyers
The Philadelphia Flyers acquired Owen Tippett, a 3rd round pick (2022), and a 1st round pick (2024) in exchange for their former captain – Claude Giroux, Connor Bunnaman, German Rubstov, and a 5th round pick (2024).
- Fantasy Impact:📈 | Tippett saw an immediate increase in ice time moving from Florida to Philadelphia; and I expect the Flyers are going to test him extensively before the end of the season. The former Panther probably won’t move the needle much in fantasy this season, but certainly someone to keep an eye on for keeper or dynasty leagues.
Frank Vatrano 🔁 New York Rangers
The New York Rangers acquired Frank Vatrano from the Florida Panthers in exchange for a 4th round pick (2022).
- Fantasy Impact:📈 | Vatrano has just 1 goal and 8 shots through 4 games with the Rangers, but his time on ice has improved, and he has been given a spot next to Artemi Panarin and Ryan Strome. If Vatrano can maintain his place in the top 6, he may have value for the remainder of the season, particularly in deep redraft leagues.
Fantasy Fallers
Brandon Hagel 🔁 Tampa Bay Lightning
The Tampa Bay Lightning acquired Brandon Hagel, and two 4th round picks (2022, 2024) in exchange for two 1st round picks (2023, 2024) and two prospects.
- Fantasy Impact:📉 | After playing the majority of the season next to Patrick Kane, it’s hard to argue that this trade will result in a positive fantasy impact for Hagel. The former Blackhawk did see time with Point and Palat on Tuesday night, so not all hope is lost. It should be mentioned once again, Hagel’s individual shooting percentage (iSH%) this season is sitting at a very unsustainable 22.9%.
Rickard Rakell 🔁 Pittsburgh Penguins
The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Rickard Rakell from the Anaheim Ducks for Zack Aston-Reese, Dominik Simon, Calle Clang, and a 2022 2nd Round pick. Rakell is a pending UFA ($3.8M AAV), playing at a 45-point, 26-goal pace through 51 games played.
- Fantasy Impact:📉 | My initial thought was that this move would be a positive one for Rakell, given that he would potentially be playing in the top 6 with Evgeny Malkin. However, Rakell’s deployment through 1 game shows a significant reduction in minutes and time on the power play (just 19% PP share). That said, 1 game does not determine the rest of the season; keep an eye on the situation.
Andrew Copp 🔁 New York Rangers
The New York Rangers acquired Andrew Copp from the Winnipeg Jets for a conditional 2nd round pick (2022), conditional 2nd round pick (2022 or 2023), and a 6th round pick (2023). With the Jets this season, Copp is on-pace for 51 points and 19 goals; pending UFA ($3.64M AAV).
- Fantasy Impact:📉 | Andrew Copp was a big part of the Jets lineup for most of the season, routinely playing over 20 minutes a night. However, from February 1st, Copp played an average of just 17:04 per game, with little power play time (31% PP share). Through 1 game in New York, it looks like Copp will assume 3rd line duties, a big role on the PK, and time on PP1. Copp’s stat line suggests there may actually be a fantasy relevant player here, but we need to see more games before passing judgement.
Max Domi 🔁 Carolina Hurricanes
The Columbus Blue Jackets traded Max Domi to the Carolina Hurricanes for prospect Aidan Hreschuk. Domi is playing at a 50-point pace with 32 points and 9 goals in 53 games to date. Pending UFA WITH A $5.3M cap hit.
- Fantasy Impact:⛔ | Max Domi has actually managed to be effective offensively this season while playing 3rd line minutes for Columbus. However, Carolina is a much deeper team, so it’s hard to see how he would benefit from this move. Again, wait to see how he is deployed with his new team before making any assumptions. Realistically though, Domi is probably no more than a deep-league streaming option at best for the remainder of the season.
Kaapo Kahkonen 🔁 San Jose Sharks
Kaapo Kahkonen was traded to the San Jose Sharks, along with a 2022 5th round draft pick, in exchange for defenceman Jacob Middleton.
- Fantasy Impact:📉 | Kahkonen did the opposite of Marc-Andre Fleury, and went from a Stanley Cup contender, to a team that should be looking to win the draft lottery. This trade may result in more volume for Kahkonen, but it almost certainly will not translate to better peripherals.
